What are the Common Esophageal Spasms Symptoms

Esophageal spasm occurs when the body releases a large amount of acetylcholine. Esophageal spasm will produce several types of symptoms. Patients will experience severe chest pain that is not related to cardiac arrest. The chest pain is as excruciating as angina pain.

Sufferers of esophageal spasm will have lump sensations in their throats. You may also experience dysphagia. Dysphagia can pose serious risk to your health because it causes you to not be able to swallow food. You will feel excruciating pain in the throat when attempting to swallow food.  The pain will cause the patient to change his diet so that he can swallow smoothly without difficulty. People that suffer from dysphagia symptom will have difficulty feeding themselves with nutritious food. They cannot eat large piece of food as it can block the air passage. When the food stays in the airway, it encourages the bacteria to grow. The accumulation of bacteria in the throat will cause you to get infected with aspiration pneumonia. Survey shows that about 20% of people who suffer from esophageal spasm will experience heartburn. Heartburn usually occur in the morning and night. The stomach acid will regurgitate into the mouth occasionally. You will feel an acid taste in your mouth when the stomach acid is regurgitated.

Esophageal spasm can be divided into two categories including diffuse esophageal spasm and nutcracker esophagus. Esophageal spasms symptoms are almost the same with nutcracker esophagus. In diffuse esophageal spasm, the esophagus of the patient will experience simultaneous contraction. When the esophagus contracts simultaneously, the food will not be able to travel to the stomach. As a result, you will experience chest pain. Intermittent dysphagia is also one of the factors for esophageal spasm. In nutcracker esophagus spasm, the muscle contraction occurs progressively.

Majority of the patients that suffer from esophageal spasm are women. This condition seldom occurs in children. However, the risk of getting esophageal spasm increase as you aged. Rarely, the patient will die because of esophageal spasm. There are a small percentage of patients that die as a result of nutrition deficiency. Because of the patient will feel pain when eating, the patient may refuse eating and die due to starvation and lack of nutrient.

When you see the doctor, you will be asked a series of questions regarding the esophageal spasm symptoms you have experienced. The doctor will ask you to give him information about the first symptoms you experienced. You should tell him how long you have been experiencing the esophageal spasm symptoms. You must tell the doctor whether the symptoms are continuous or occasional. If the symptom is severe, you must tell the doctor as well. In addition, you can inform the doctor about the things you have done to improve the symptoms. If there is anything you do that worsen the esophageal spasms symptom, you can tell the doctor about it. If you know of any food that triggers the symptoms, you should record them down on a piece of paper and show it to the doctor.
